Middle Musquodoboit Agricultural Society has roots tracing back to 1819. Agricultural Societies in Nova Scotia were established to help farmers improve farming skills. A variety of courses, known as Short Courses, were offered through the Department of Agricultural. Agricultural representatives came to the Exhibition Grounds to conduct these courses. Farmers at that time did not have the time or the transportation to travel to Truro, so the short courses were conducted in Middle Musquodoboit. The Department of Agriculture would also transport animals including stallions, bulls, boars and rams to the area for breeding purposes to improve livestock in the area. Crop seeds were also promoted to increase yields.
Exhibitions were hosted by the Agricultural Societies for farmers to exhibit their stock or crops for local competition. By hosting the Halifax County Exhibition, beginning in 1884, we continue to exhibit livestock, poultry, vegetables, etcetera for friendly competition. It has now evolved into an annual event for the whole family throughout the Musquodoboit Valley and surrounding communities which highlights the contribution and the heritage of farmers.
Over 14,000 people pass through the gates during the four-day event in August for the Exhibition.
The MMAS is operated by an elected Board of Directors and a set of individual committees that report to the Board.
